Q: How do you do the shoulder roll? – Mike
A: The shoulder is a defensive tactic using slick subtle movement of the front shoulder to keep yourself from getting hit by a punch. Shoulder rolls are easy to do but require a lot of skill to use properly. If you do them against an advanced opponent, they will counter-punch you easily! Imagine yourself standing in the basic boxing position. From here, you have 2 ways of doing the shoulder roll.
Straight Across
Simply pull your front shoulder straight across momentarily covering your chest and chin as your front shoulder slaps your opponent’s punch away. If you’re real slick, you’ll come back with a counter-punch immediately before his next punch lands. (Good to use against straight punches that land INSIDE the shoulder and also for hooks that land OUTSIDE the shoulder.)
Under A Punch
Do the same thing but this time bend your knees, so you roll under the punch. Again, this is also considered a slip but can still be considered a shoulder roll since you’re also rolling your shoulder away here. As the punch clears over your head, release the bend in your knees and come back with a counter-punch. (Good to use against hooks and big crosses.)

Johnny N
Yes, you can.

Johnny you said it can be counter easy by an advanced opponent but how come floyd doesn’t get countered like that .Ty
Johnny N
Anything can be countered by an advanced opponent. Floyd is a whole other ballgame. His shoulder roll DOES get countered at times but I’m going to guess that the reason why his doesn’t get countered as often is because he switches it up and does many more things than just a simple shoulder roll. It doesn’t matter what technique you use, it can and will get countered if that’s all you plan to do.
