Q: I am __ years old and just barely started boxing. Am I too old to box or ever be any good?
A: I’ve never been one to believe the old adage about boxing that goes “Boxing is a young man’s game.” There was an article on ESPN 2 years ago showing how there are still several boxers in their 30’s and 40’s that are still winning world championships!
I would recommend a safe and healthy dose of boxing for just about capable person! It’s never too late to improve your physical health, sharpen your mind, raise your confidence, and break a sweat all in the name of fun! As long as you have a good trainer and gym that understands your goals as a boxer, there’s no reason why you can’t accomplish them. Boxing can be a great source of exercise, entertainment, or competition whatever your needs may be.
I’ve seen people start boxing at the age of 25 with minimal dedication and still manage to have a great time while accomplishing new personal goals in fighting and physical shape.
The bottom line – it’s never too late to start boxing. All you have to do is go to a gym and see for yourself that there are men and women of all ages looking to get a great workout mentally and physically. I hope this helps!

Carl Thompson didn’t start boxing until he was in his mid-to-late 20s, and was a 3-time world champion.

Look at bernard hopkins quality fighter that turned his life around

Started boxing as a pro at 28, admittedly didn’t hold the world for long at all….but he didn’t sit on his ass.
Great article by the way, tactics I’ve always used as a southpaw because I’m told to but without knowing why till now.

jhonny in metuer boxing there is the cadet grade, junior, youth grade and also elite. what are the age limits/ experiences of each grp.
Johnny N
If you’re in the US, I know there is the USA boxing site that gives you the full details. Usually, the ages are split up into little kids ranges and then adults and masters (old adults). There’s also “open” class which is like any age can join if they’re in super shape. There are also “novice” divisions for fighters with 10 fights or less.
Mike D
I hardly consider 35 ( where the masters start) as old unless you count boxing like dog years.
Stan
Guys, you are all so young… lol
I’m 44 and started this year. Previously I had done fencing, but not for many years now.
I took on boxing because of my interest in the sport and as a means to get fit. I am a paramedic and made the interservice games my goal to compete in – a way to force myself to get fit or get my ass handed to me.
I competed ok, didnt win, but didnt embarrass myself too much. But it was awesome fun and I feel all the better for it.
Speed and power is important, but I found endurance, pacing yourself and being smart is what really wins fights. Skills beat power just about all the time.
I’m not 20 anymore, but in some ways I wouldnt want to be.
I’m glad I took the plunge to take on a sport I’ve been interested in for years, but hadnt really tried.
Most of all I am fitter, faster and have new friends.
They say the body you take into your fifties is the one you are likely to have for the rest of your life – I made the decision not to be the fat dad who cant keep up with his kids.
I only hope more older guys and girls made a similar lifestyle choice.
Cheers Stan
Butch
Hello,
We are of the same age. I took up boxing a year ago but I’ve always been athletic all my life (basketball, not a pro, but I can play!), with occasional visits to the gym now and then. And just like you I’ve been a fan of the sport of boxing for the longest time now. What made me take the plunge was finally boxing being recognized as a complete fitness workout and the sprouting of boxing gyms everywhere. So now, because of my overly competitive drive I am training myself to get a professional license and maybe get into a fight or two. Nothing fancy or delusions of fighting for the world crown. Just something that I can’t explain and have the need to see through.
It’s more of a life statement than a boxing statement. Please update me with your boxing life. I am a thousand miles away but I’m interested in how it’s turning out for you, especially the body conditioning part if you’re into it. Goodluck and God bless.
Butch (from Manila)

Butch

I sat down my whole life smoking cannabis I am skinny and fat all in one but now at the age of 31 have stopped smoking and got in the gym am I wasting my time ? ?
Ala
Same thing here. I start play boxing in 32 years.. lol
Johnny N
Exercising is healthy, boxing is fun, I don’t know how you’re calling it a “waste of time” when it’s miles better than what you were doing your whole life. If you’re trying to be a world champion, that’s a different story.
raiden
Hello Coach Johnny,
I have started my training lately, i m 22 .My coach says that its too late to achieve target or make career in Boxing. Is it soo.???
Please reply
aman
Hey jhonny where r u located ??
Kyler mcguire
No!!! It’s not too late. if you’ve “sat your life down, why sit more? Go box! Go do cardio and whatever you please. NO .. it isn’t too late to start.
Pete
Agree totally, im 42 and training for a fight, anxous but like you been a fan of boxing and always wanted to tick it off the bucket list
Giligan
Butch, I’ve been boxing since I was 12 years old and am now 44 years old. I did’nt turn pro until I was 28 years old. I was determined to become a world champion but failed:( I’m from the Sanluis valley here in Colorado so boxing trainers are hard to find so I decided to train myself. Bad move lol, I went on to fight 7 professional fights training myself and lost everyone of them fights. I retired at 42 years old but I would still want to compete but no one to train me so if you have good trainer I would say go for it because age is nothing but a number and as long as you have drive and determination you will go far:) but just remember boxing is a very tough sport and you can hurt really bad so if you decide to compete take it serious and best of luck to you my friend.
Dominic Emerson
Sir when you were boxing pro did you make enough money to live comfortably from boxing or did you also work another job.
Giligan
Dominic, no it wasn’t enough money to live comfortably And yes I did have a full time job but it didn’t stop me from living my dream of being a professional fighter and I gave it my all but like I said, I trained myself and I believe if I had had a good trainer I could have competed in the top 10.
the second greatest of all time
you know muhammad ali had i think it was his cousin but anyways his cousin was a fencer for the olympics and his cousins footwork was always faster than alis. ali said that fencers have some of the fastest feet he has ever seen, and that he boxes like fencing…im a little fuzzy on the story its been a long time since i last heard it .so does a history with fencing help you with boxing much.
Johnny N
Good footwork improves good footwork. Fencing has good footwork, but it doesn’t mean you need to be a fencer to improve your footwork. Maybe you can just copy their drills.
I do have a friend that was a former fencer and yes, their footwork is incredible. I guess when you’re sword-fighting you really have to learn how to not get touched at all, and the easiest way to do that is to move out of range.

Hey,whom ever You are?I really like the way you put things,it helps motivate me.Stan?Im 33 years old,and for half my life ive had a dream to become a pro boxer,Im slightly overweight, but I just got involved in a boxing club her in Milwaukee,Wi called Ace Boxing,My trainer is Frank Porter he is a very good man, whom runs this club, and You can join for free. Its non-profit,I really feel for this man He really deserves more recognition for his inspiration, and a Community advocate,Also, I have much Respect for Him Hes been doing this for over 12 years, and receives nothing out of it.Is there anyone I can contact to possibly help this guy get a surprise in return for all hes done for the Youth, and our community. And Boxing is in his bloodline his uncle started this small boxing club in 1960 its called the Del Porter Pavilion,Though its very small, this man Frank makes the best out of what he can, also his grandfather was a pro boxer and,I believe once a Heavyweight champion, named Cyclone,Porter?Im not positive, but pretty sure that was his name.Anyways do You have any advice for me to help get this individual some type of recognition,or reward for all he does? Now back to myself, like I said Im 33,And have a Dream,I could of started this 11 years ago,but sompthin was kinda holdin me back,I also approached Mr,Frank Del Porter 2 years ago,and didn’t follow through because of my problem.Anyways Im now 33,And been clean 14 months,Also not to mention I have a lot of Martial arts Experience,And some Boxing background,Ive been told sompthing ive heard in a boxing movie,”Quote”You have the right hand of a fallen safe,A trainer I had 3 years ago told me this.So I do have some Experience,And also I mentioned Im a bit overweight,But if you seen me You wouldent consider me fat.I have broad shoulders, and A lot of muscle under my chubbiness,I ve been told by dozens of people that have felt my arms when I flex That ive got the hardest arms they’ve ever felt,I was thinkin cause when I was Younger like 14-15 or so All I did was Skateboard, and Workout,And Practice,Id do 1000,sit ups everyday, and about = to 200 push ups a day every day for about 2 years straight,Also always concentrating on Van-Damme,Thats who I wanted to be like.Anyways with my background and dedication if I give it my all,and have this good COACH,I call him in my corner tellin me I can do it what do You think?I know I can,but some blogs I read say its not that possible,But keep in mind besides my coach,Your the first person,I actually have had a chance to write too,If You want I have a Facebook too,And so does My Trainer. But can I do it?
Johnny N
Start training, Matt! I wish you the best of luck.
Joshua
Im 20yo
I just started boxing but Ive been following boxing for over a year. As I box everyday and watch pros fight I just want to fight as good as a pro. It made me want to train hard to go pro but when I first joined the gym, one of the guys said I was too old to go pro at this age. Is it even possible for me to go pro? Ive been doing good so far with good speed and a couple of good spars against amatuerboxers whove been boxing for 2-4 years. But I want to know.
Anon
Thanks Stan, this is massively inspirational. I’m 31 and only started a few months ago. I’ve got a long way to go but, despite originally just wanted to get fit (and assuming I’d give up after a month or so) I now would like to compete against people at my level. I’ve got a long way to go, but I’d love to be ready for an amateur fight in the next 12 months and, even if I’m not ready, I’d happily be proud in defeat. It’s given me confidence I never had and a new outlook on life. Maybe I’ll never compete but, for now, I have something to work for, even if I’m not great at it.
harry
can some one tell me boxer who started boxeing at the age of 15
David F
Im about to turn 18 this week and Ive been doing muay thai (because their are no good boxing gyms around) now for a little over a month and I feel like ive learned a lot, but i told my master my only true dream is to become a pro boxer and when I say pro I mean people will know my name like they know Mayweather and I’ll do whatever it takes to reach that goal. This is to me the most graceful sport their is their isnt a day that goes by I find myself day dreaming about being a champion one day. Jack Johnson said once “Dont let your dreams be dreams” and so I sure wont! Im at the gym all the time and when im not im trying to get my road work in. Do you think 18 is to late to start boxing to go pro? Everyone doubts me but my hearts never been so sure about anything like it is me being one of the greatest oneday.
Strm.Strm
I’m 19 this year and I just started boxing. Man, I’m very happy to know there is another great man who has same thinking, who loves boxing, and who can take everything to achieve our goals. I’ve found some information about late starters. But there were so many legendary pro boxers like Rocky Marciano, George Foreman, Sony Liston etc., I hope we’ll meet one day to notice our Victories! Please anyone who has same goal and just starting or whatever contact me – [email protected] / Let’s create a group and grow together in boxing. PS!
Johnny N
I started at 19, too! 🙂
Good luck, fellas.
Billy Burden
hello i am 16 and i have boxed for 1year now, i want to be a pro, is it too late to make it? how long do you recon i need to become a pro or get in to the Olympics? thanks
Johnny N
You’ll probably need at least 10 years of training to reach the Olympic level. Better get started now if that’s what you’re dreaming of.
Trey
That’s very discouraging, Johnny. I started when I was 27 and my goal was to go to the olympics by 30. :'(
Johnny N
The Olympics only happens once every 4 years. The next one is in 2016 and the one after that 2020. You better start competing in the Golden Gloves and win every tournament that you fight in and hopefully make it to the trials. I’m not even sure there’s time left for you to make the 2016 team.
Jeff Pyper
Very good Johnny. I’m 51, 3 weeks into my training. Blessed with good health and fitness. I always thought I’d be a good boxer and decided to give it a go. Having a blast! Love the sport, the training, the people. Looking forward to what the future of boxing holds for me. It’s never too late to start living a dream, whatever that may be!
Johnny N
I’m happy for you, Jeff. Let me know if you ever get a fight!
The Blade
I was good in boxing during 15-18 and I loose my trainer and sponsor due travelling I am 23 and I want to give next shot .Honestly I feel like wounded beast,I am glad I manage to maintain my weight.I am sure that the person who be my next trainer will be happy.

Hi, Johnny. Im turning 26 by the end of Dec. I have zero fighting experience or training background though I had over 5 years of weight lifting experience. I was wondering am I too old to start if I want to have a professional boxing career? I saw on other boxing forum that a lot of people believe either you have the talent or you don’t. If you have it, you start by late 20’s you still can make a glory career but if you don’t have it even if you pick up as a preteen you most likely still won’t go nowhere. They suggest me to go to a boxing gym and try for couple months. They said once I try a little bit I will know myself I have the talent or not. What’s your opinion ? Thanks
Johnny N
It’s pretty much impossible to know if you’re good at anything if you don’t try it first. If you want to do something, go out and do it. Can you be a great boxer? Can you be a famous painter? I don’t know; you have to try it first and see if you even like it.

Gentlemen (and a few Ladies): I am 61 years old, 6 feet 5 inches tall, 265 pounds. Per session, I run 3 miles, do 6 rounds on the double-end bag, 5 rounds on the heavy bag, and 4 rounds on the speed bag. I also do cycling and especially enjoy running up and down stadium steps and seats, sometimes while carrying a back pack. I understand the principles of hand speed as it relates to using my core muscles and good footwork. I can dance and sting with the left jab, as well as box inside with those swarmers and sluggers. Besides, I had a hard time getting my wife into the boxing gym, but now I damn near have to hitch her to a tractor and drag her out after our sessions; she likes throwing hooks.
Anyway, the younger boxers will not spar with me. Am I too old???
Johnny N
No, not too old at all. There are many great gyms out there that are willing to work with people your age. In the gyms I’ve gone to, the old guys have no problems finding sparring.
matt aitchison
Johnny,I sent a really long message to someone, and I thought it was You,Please try to find it,and please tell me what You think,Its under Matt Aitchison. Also are ou the one whom Is the Expert Boxing COACH,Host?I really admire Your work,I found You under Coach Porters Likes on Facebook,Anyways my message was sent to a Stan I believe,And hes 44 Years old?Or maybe these messages just all come to You,Please Respond Johnny N. P.s. Matt Aitchison Thank-You!
Justus
Hey Johnny N: Thanks for your comments. I need to apologize for not being accurate in the last part of my note above. I can find gyms, etc. The truth is the younger fellows (heavyweights) are SCARED to spar with me, so they say (I unintentionally knocked out a couple of them recently). And I can easily outperform the geezers in my age group. So, perhaps I should act more my age and pursue birdwatching or something? What do you say?
(GREAT SITE you have here! Keep up the good work!)
Johnny N
Hahaha, you are awesome, Justus! You should compete in the masters division and/or look for a gym with tougher fighters. Perhaps looking into a pro gym would be good. You’ve got an awesome body for your age so why not enjoy it?
Gil
Definitely try to compete in the Masters, Justus. If you have the fire and desire, go for it.
Justus
Thanks Johnny N: Will definitely look into the Master’s Division and other pro gyms. Why not? Great suggestion. And yes, for you – and the rest of your readers – it’s strange, but your body CAN get better with age. At first, I didn’t believe it. My strength and stamina are much better now than when I was in my 20s, and in college under an athletic scholarship. (Now, if we can just get the young fellows thinking a little more about HAND SPEED. Usually, this is how I outperform most of the others: Hand Speed and acquiring the habit of always aiming for the chin at every opportunity, especially for registered amateurs and pros.) Stay healthy and wise! Justus here.
Johnny N
You’re an inspiration to “old guys” everywhere, Justus. Keep me updated on your progress.

i have just turned 15 a month ago, and i have only ever wanted to become a pro boxer, is it too late for me to chase that dream ?

Not too late.

I’ve been wanting to be a pro boxer since I was 24 as I won a couple of street fights and was blessed with ultra fast hands and really good reach and had some skill….for the next 5 years I trained spasmodically as I was way too exhausted after work to be bothered training very hard and at 29 tore a rotator cuff muscle and had to be put on a wait list for an operation as it was $15,000 to get it done….I’m still on that wait list and I’m now 32 and a half and gained 20 kgs from being 6″1 and 75 kgs to 95 kgs…so I’m 32 and a half, fat with a dodgy shoulder and never been in a boxing gym (as I worked out at home) but still think I’m a chance to capture some sort of title…I’ll lose the weight….go to a boxing gym for 4 or 5 months, have ten fights a year all rnd one k.os due to my natural talent and speed and when I’m 36/37just before my reflexes go I’ll win a title…..then go heavy weight for fun till I’m 45….I’m confident it could still happen.
Johnny N
Go for it, Kenny. Why not?!
Bruno
In my opinion starting boxing at 18 and turn pro as soon as you want its possible… to be honest i wouldnt even worry about amateur boxing! Look at tysons fury cousin he started early but hes 18 and is a pro … A PRO AT 18!!!!!!!
Johnny N
This is a bit dangerous advice for beginners. Many pros even the ones with only 5 fights probably have 50 fights as an amateur. So I don’t recommend for beginners to start pro because it’s so dangerous going up against a trained killer. At least test yourself in the amateurs first against guys who are actual novices. And if you think you can handle it, then step up. But don’t start out as a pro; it’s much too dangerous in boxing.
varun singh
I’ m varun…now i’ m 23 ….now i realize my self that i would be a boxer plus MMA plus UFC ……..
becoze i”m having a passion of becoming a fighter. i want to spend my hole life in fight….
i can bear the pain ,as much as big it is……but i know nothing about boxing…………….
Is it i”am late??
Johnny N
Go to a local gym and see for yourself if you’re too late or not.
varun singh
hey john , give me some step by step instructions to enter in boxing ring….
Ian
Bounce down the corridor with a cocky look on your face.
Walk up the stairs to the ring.
Option A: Insert left leg under the top rope, then duck under the rope and follow through with the rest of your body.
Option B: Hold top rope with both hands, lean back and jump over the top rope, but keep both hands on it, essentially causing your body to rotate 360 degrees and land on your feet.
(for visual reference, search YouTube for Prince Naseem Hamed and watch his ring entrances).
Johnny N
HAHAHA

Hi, I’m 17 years old and I’ve been training for 2-3 weeks I haven’t had any amutuar exp yet but I’m really intrested in becoming pro. I started at 14 trained for a 6-7 months and then stopped becouse of my school work. Will it possible for me to become pro in a few years?
Johnny N
Take some amateur fights first to gauge your level and from there you’ll have a better idea of how long it would take.
NP
Why is it that guys can start out older in MMA (into their 40s), but in boxing it’s considered much better to start out young.
I’m 30 and yes, I’d probably consider myself too old to consider boxing as a fun activity that I enjoy.
Johnny N
Because boxing requires much more speed and coordination. You are spending the whole fight on your feet which requires far more balance than if you were to roll around on the ground. You also need tons of speed as boxing is at a close distance…close enough to strike fast, but far enough that you have to be fast enough to cover the distance (and then the combination attacks are faster). MMA can be really close or really far and so you don’t need as much speed compared to boxing. MMA attack combinations are usually not as fast either.
Boxing is also far more refined and the reason why you have to start younger is because most of the competition starts younger and is trained by generations of experience. MMA is a very young sport and competition is not as evolved.
Tony J
I’m gonna be 22 on September 30th & I’m beginning my boxing quest next month!!! Big Deal!!! What’s a learning curve to a guy who can fight all the way into his 40’s like me!!! # B-hop!!! I was running probably 2 k when I stopped I didn’t feel it till a couple of days I think the tendons or muscles lock up when I bend my knee and there seems to be a lump or bulge near the kneecap, and I have to press the lump for it to dissapear….oh yea I dislocated my knee cap when I was 16 could this be the main factor am I developing OA….and do you think boxing is safe for someone with a knee injury like mine
Johnny N
Boxing is relatively safe even if you do have knee injuries but you have to be careful about how you move around the ring. It will be ok as long as you’re not sparring at extreme intensity. I would get that knee checked out. It sounds like you may have some tendinitis going on there.
Mark D
I’ve been a Karate instructor for some time now but nothing beats Boxing for training and sheer intensity and try to add as much of this training as I can to my classes, I’m 46 and still train nearly every day, in fact the older you get the more should keep your training up, don’t let age get in the way.
Maurice (call him mr.) wright
My name is Maurice ,I will be 26 next month I stand at 5 foot 11, 170 average weight .I have a real passion for boxing but never had any training because of my age is it too late to start ameture boxing and turn pro and become a champion if not how do I get started?
Johnny N
Get to a gym and start training!
Joe
I read it is recommended to have 2-5years as an amateur before going pro otherwise you could get hurt. That means he’ll be starting pro at 30 if he were to start now. But wouldn’t there be much younger and experience fighters that are pro? Does he really have a chance man? Ya Bernard Hopkins is a dinosaur but he has so many years of boxing that’s why he can keep up with the young fighters. And also many of the great fighters startat 10…
Shomari Wilson
Im 19.. Im 6’6 and I weigh 152.. many people tell me im goin to be a game changer with my hight and weight. N many people tell me its too late for me to start. I rather chase it now then to regret it later. Not sure if that helped any body.. I just wanted to say it. #GodsFighter

2)WHAT IT TAKES TO BE KNOWN AS ALI AND TYSON
3)I DONT KNOW WHAT I AM BUT IN A FIGHT MY NAIN INTENSION IS TO KILL MY OPPONENT….
I SMOKE I DRINK AND ON ALCOHOL….PLEASE TELL ME ANSWER OF MA QUESTION.
Joe
Your not suppose to kill your opponent. If you fight like that your gona leave yourself open. You have to out smart him too man. Unless your tyson but i seriously doubt your as hands are as fast as his. You need: Strength, Speed, Stamina, Skill and Spirit. Im sure you got the strength and spirit but you need some of each bro.
Joe
And stop drinking and smoking that will drastically drain your stamina and speed. Come on man!
Austin
with that attitude i highly doubt you because anything much less a boxer. you must be level headed my friend. no you are not to old to start boxing. most people start earlier, but that is not a rule. it takes about 9 nine years to make a true, professional career ready boxer, in my opinion, to others this might be arguable. but you cannot aim to kill your opponent, because you will be in for an almighty shock when you meet that boxer that takes serious offense to your ideas of taking his life. boxers are like marathon runners and dancers, or race car drivers we balance our abilities and usually don’t go flat out all the time because it is too risky, when you fight flat out, you usually won’t last the round unless you have the conditioning of a god, and even then, its merely impossible. you try to kill that fighter who is a more skilled boxer in the ring and you will find your self getting stiff jabs to the throat every opportunity he gets. as far as drinking and smoking. that is a no. it weakens you mentally and physically. small amounts of alcohol are proven to be healthy if you can keep it at that point. but smoking completely rules you out as a fighter. at this point you are just pretending. there are hundreds of thousands of boxers who train day in and day out to be the best they can be and here you are smoking and expecting a future in boxing. i hope that you can use these words to empower you and become a healthy fighter i wish you the best!

Is it too late to start boxing at so and so age? It really depends on you and nobody can give you a definite answer. How good are your genetics? How ambitious are you? Do you fold at the first comment of discouragement? I am older than some of you, I am 26. I am about to compete. You might think wow at 26 he must be crazy! Well, I have been boxing for personal reasons since I was 18. Therefore, I have been up keeping my body. You should listen yourself (and your coach, who is your mentor) and know the science behind your own body, rather than what someone else has to say. It is all about how well you kept your body and genetics, of course. If you asked me what is a good age to start competing? I would say 18. But I was preoccupied with university. Now that I am done, I can focus on boxing. How much time are you willing to put forth to this sport? The older you get, the more hours you will have to spend. Either way, you’re in for a treat because exercising will always improve your life.
Alex
I started at 27 and I had no problems with competing.
Jon bass
Stopped at 20,started competing again at 43.have to train harder now than before but loving every minute.

I live in a very remote area , I am 21 , I have the desire to be a boxer . I learn about boxing only through internet because I have nothing around . I am training hard from the last 2years but I have no source around to compete , people are not interested here . people call me insane and bla bla . help me.
David Greene
I’m 22. I grew up playing wrestling, rugby and football In school. I didn’t have the grades to go to university and that is a must in Canada Where I reside. I did some mma in a for a year then joined the Canadian forces as a combat engineer. Now that I am thru training for my trade I want to join boxing for the rush and the competition. How does one prove themselves worth coaching and training?
Johnny N
Learn a little, do a little. Learn a little more, do a little more. Anyone who keeps showing capacity for learning and doing more is worth coaching.

Hi Johnny, thank you for the wonderful work out here.
My name is Adarsh and I’m 23. I never got a chance to get into any of the sports due to my family condition, however; I always had and have intense passion for the sports. I know its late but never too late to start. I play pretty good basketball, not a pro though. Now I’m very much interested in starting my career as a boxer and I have few questions and hope to get the answers from you.
1) For the time being I cannot afford a professional coach, can I start my training on my own and continue for a year or 18 months? If so, what all would you recommend?
2) My friends says that I have a very good reflex action, as I am a very good catcher of a cricket ball in the short extra cover (critical fielding area in the cricket game) . So how can I make use of this skill in boxing career?
My legs move fast aswell since I play basketball.
I sincerely request for your reply and the tips to train on my own.
I would appreciate suggestions from anybody who sees this post. I guarantee I’ll be a fine boxer in spite of late start.
Thanks & Regards
Adarsh

I’m 37 going on 38 in a few months and I’ve been training/working out with amatuer boxers since 2013 and I was scared/nervous about starting as an older guy buy now I’m getting in shape and I can hold my own. It’s something I think everyone should try regardless of age or skill set.

I’m 34 years old and looking to start training as a boxer. Any recommendations on how to get started or how to get an opportunity for a chance in the ring when I’m ready.
Senior
Don’t go too fast too quickly.
Use your brain to train smart. You’re older but you’re smarter.
Keep training and you will have a chance in the ring.
Andy
Hey all!
I’m 28 years old, played ice hockey for 10 years until i was 16. 4 years in a buzz after that, drugs, fighting, alcohol, you name it. Started playing football at age of 21, dropped out of that too about one year ago. Both of my childhood heroes (my grandpas) were telling me to start boxing when i was around 18. Until this day when i finished reading one particular book from an female MMA figher, i’ve never even thought about combat sports. Book struck me hard, and actually made me realize why i dropped ice hockey and football, first of all was too afraid to take the next step when i was 16 and hockey was coming even bigger part of my life than before. But it also made me realize that myself is the only obstacle between being a quitter, or being the best that i can ever be.
However, after reading that book i’ve decided to go for boxing, the “ultimate world champion millions in bank” kind of pro career is definately out of reach by now. It’s good to have dreams… I’m super competitive, only thing that sucked big time in hockey and in football was that even that you knew you were playing amazing game, your team still might lose. And i hated that, for not being able to affect the outcome of the game. So i think individual sports, like boxing would suit me well, since you are the only one to blame for the loss and only one to cheer for victory.
Didn’t mean to blur out my whole lifestory, but what do you guys think. I’m seriously considering going all out with this, seeing where it will take me.
Peace!
Junior
I’m exactly 19 years 5 months old and I’ve have been training at a local boxing gym for about a month.
I’m in such excellent shape & I’m a very athletic person but I keep asking myself is if still possible to turn pro.. I workout every single day.. I diet.. I take care of myself asmuch as I possible can.. & I still doubt myselff… Everyday I run 3 miles on my way to the gym & 3 on my way back and its something I enjoy doing, but I wonder if its worth doing it because of my old age.
I compare myself with Bernard Hopkins & Sergio Maravilla due to their old debutes, & its really exiting to know that they made it at such age making it pro & best undefeated records ever …
Senior
Don’t think about going pro now. Focus on training.
You’ve started boxing one month ago right? Just focus on your training. If you keep going and you love it it’s not gonna be a problem to turn pro.
The real question is are you able to keep training like this for 2 years? Then you will be a lot more aware of what’s your level and if you’re able to make it to the pros.
I’ve seen guys started boxing at 28 years old and doing pretty good at amator fight. Starting at 19 if you’re in shape is not the point. The point is can you keep training?
I hope my answers is usefull to you and sorry for my english

There’s some serious dreamers on this website! Alot of you have probably seen the rocky films and thought “Right that’s me” but in reality your probably xbox playing wannabees , for the ones who claim they want to be the next big thing then worry if they’re. Too old? If you really had the heart you claim then you wouldn’t care about your age, also don’t be naive with your training a few weeks wont make you a pro
Faisal

I am 41 and just started boxing a month ago. This is the hardest thing I have ever tried. I thought being active duty and being in Air Force shape was good, but am finding out I am nowhere near boxing shape..I love the workouts even though I am dead in the end of them, I fell like I am getting better every day and am striving to start sparring in a month or two, by August 2016 hopefully. I have the heart and drive to succeed at this, but I want to get my amateur career filled in before I go pro. I do the need the money due to personal financial reasons, but having the amateur background is better than just trying to go pro. We’ll see how I do.

I am 16 and I started to watch boxing on tv and it looked fun so I was wondering can I get some advice on what to do.
Roman
I don’t think that age is a big factor as much you are interested or passion. I just started boxing at 24 age.
It happen suddenly when I joined gym that I realized that I’m good in boxing. Baby, my both hand is too fast and speed , I guess better than of many professional boxers. Also, I have good stamina and I could trained as much as requirement of my trainer. Beside, I am doing job and i trained for 2 hours in four days in a week. I am so confident that I am gonna play tournament after 3 – 6 months. Its not about age just as passion and anybody enjoy. Good luck!!
Petar
I just turn 15 in the end of june, would it be more difficult for me to train to do boxing professionally since most people who are world champs started at around 8-11, or do you think i would manage
Vishal Bhardwaj

Hello sir I’m 20 and thinking to join boxing as I’m very much interested in boxing and I have that potential too because I practice at home very often.I want to join gym but there is no boxing gym in my town .So to compete in matches is it mandatory for a person to be in club ?
Johnny N
I don’t think you have to be a club but it helps to have a trainer who will make sure you are put into even competition. If you go alone and nobody knows who you are, it can be hard to get you a fair fight.
Lakpa
Thank you, Sir can you tell me if I start rigourous training at home only how many years it will take to be a good boxer .
Johnny N
It will take you about 3-5 years to learn alone as a boxer who spend 1 year learning in the gym. So that’s about the ratio. And then you can decide how good you want to be.
ankit patel
Johnny sir i like ur advices.but i want to ask u a question.
My age is 19 now& i have great passion in boxing. I asked to a national coach for playing boxing & he told me that climate of india is not very favourable to player when crosses 25.they told me that i was late to boxing..plz suggest me sir im so confused..
Johnny N
Try improve as quickly as you can or move to another country with a stronger boxing program.
Doug
Hey Johnny,
I’ve been reading your post and replies for a few weeks now and I finally plucked the courage to get to my local boxing club. I’m 28 years old, 85kg, and 5’11. Even though I’ve never boxed before, I actually come from a solid boxing background, I have an uncle who boxed for the Irish defense forces and reached Italy in the finals and my grandfather on my Da’s was also a boxer in Dublin in the 60’s & 70’s named Mcormack. I started tonight and the training was enjoyable but it was one of the hardest training sessions I’ve done.
The workout was intense, 8 two minute workouts with a partner that included 2 different sized medicine balls thrown in the air 10 times with left and right hooks, tennis balls thrown at your face to help reflexes , 2 different sized dumbells punches in the air 10 times to strengthen your power, frog leaps over your partner q0 times with other workouts, I know it might not sound that intense but quick 2 minute rounds with 60 seconds rest between the next activity is tough but satisfying. I just had to keep going, I wasn’t going to be the one to sit out with a bottle.of water,
The guy who owns it has asked me to go to the experienced classes on a Monday. I want to put my all into this, I’ve found a passion that’s been hidden, I’m physically fit and going to work on my cardio training to drop weight before I start sparring and I wondered, have.you any advice on what to eat when boxing or like a diet? Like should I cut out carb?, go on a protein diet? cut out dark meat? Any advice that could help me would be awesome 🙂
Johnny N
For me, eat what you have to eat. Don’t starve yourself. I eat more carbs and more proteins, actually. But my body and metabolism might be different from yours.
Rick
Im 15 i started boxing and have been working for 3 weeks so far, im also getting in shape, you think i can be pro one day?
Johnny N
Why not, Rick?
dan
A few years ago I got into the army boxing team but never fought even once because I injured my shoulder.iam now a civilian and work shift work 5 days on 5 off 12 hour shifts and am now 26, do you think it’s possible to train and become a decent amateur working shifts?
Johnny N
You won’t know until you try, right? 🙂
Riccardo Hernandez
I’m an extremely youthful 57 yr. old man who wants to box in tournaments. The trainers at the gym I attend are amazed at my energy level and work ethic. Commenting they wish they had me as a youngster. My goal to box when younger was cut short due to a 25 year incarceration. My past 13 years of liberty has been frought with drug abuse and injuries. Fortunately the drug abuse has ended. I just went thru torn rotator cuff surgery on left shoulder 8 months ago. Rehab went well. The right shoulder has a small tear. I’ve had these injuries for 10 yrs. After a rigorous pad session of upper cuts the other day, my right shoulder is in pain. I work out for 3 to 4 hours a day. Do you think the shoulder will be ok if I stop working out so hard or is advisable to do the surgery and be out of training another 8 months?
Johnny N
Riccardo, I would ease up on the power a little bit and push it only if you’re actually in the ring. Other than that, I think you’ll need a doctor’s recommendation to know what you can and can’t do. It would certainly help to do some rehab exercises to help support that shoulder as best as you can.

I have son, age of 1.5 years, and want to see him as a professional boxer. Its a very tough sports lets see how far we can survive.

Im 52 and plan on trying to get a pro license asap. As an amateur in the mid 80s my record was 14-0. I had one fight after that at the age of 38 and lost a 4 round decision. At that time I wasn’t in the best of shape. Now I’m in the best shape of my life, stronger, still as quick as I was or close and have more power behind my punches. My weight class is super- middle weight. I’m prepared for a Court battle if I’m denied a license. Any thoughts?
Phillip Dickson
I’m now 46 and haven’t boxed since I was 20,, I want to train and get fit again through boxing and sparring not fighting do you think I’m to old now

Hehe…what do you think?

Yes you can start boxing right now, although you have not that speed and energy as the kids have when they start but boxing is a game which gives you energy and reason for motivation . I suggest you to start it and make your life healthy and excited.

I enrolled my daughter in Taekwondo here in Iowa through the YMCA. Part of their program is the adults can do combative s for free. I’m thinking, hey I’m old, out of shape, been smoking for 30 years why not get into shape? So most of the training is boxing, then some basic combative s training. This by far has been the intense cardio works outs I have ever experienced. At 54 years old, I am surviving, but trying to spar with 17 year olds can be tough, there younger, faster, can out last me. But I have to admit it’s fun and I like the challenge, just wish I had better cardio. So I could last a little longer. But the kids take it easy on the “old man”.
